How to Convert Chrome Music Lab to MP3 (High Quality & Free)

Aileenon 4 months ago

Chrome Music Lab's Song Maker is one of the most popular tools for creating quick musical sketches. It's fun, accessible, and free. However, sharing your creations can be frustrating.

By default, Song Maker only lets you save your work as a .wav file (which can be huge) or a .mid file (which has no sound on its own).

What if you want a high-quality, small MP3 file to share on WhatsApp, Discord, or TikTok?

In this guide, we'll show you the fastest way to convert your Chrome Music Lab songs to MP3 using MidiToolbox, and as a bonus, we'll show you how to upgrade the sound quality with professional instruments.

Why Convert to MP3 instead of WAV?

While Chrome Music Lab allows WAV export, MP3s are superior for sharing because:

  • Smaller File Size: MP3s are roughly 10x smaller than WAVs, making them instant to send.
  • Better Compatibility: Works on every device, from old phones to modern smartwatches.
  • Custom Sounds: By using the method below, you aren't stuck with the default "Marimba" sound. You can swap it for a Grand Piano or Synth!

Step-by-Step Guide: From Song Maker to MP3

Follow these 3 simple steps. No software installation is required—everything runs in your browser.

Step 1: Export MIDI from Chrome Music Lab

First, we need to get the "musical notes" out of Song Maker.

  1. Open your project in Chrome Music Lab Song Maker.
  2. Click the "Save" button in the bottom right corner.
  3. Don't copy the link. Instead, look for the download options.
  4. Click "Download MIDI".
  5. A .mid file will be saved to your device.

Note: Do not click "Download WAV". We want the MIDI file so we can process it with higher quality.

Step 2: Upload to MIDI Toolbox Converter

Now, we will turn that silent MIDI file into a sounding MP3.

  1. Go to the MidiToolbox Converter.
  2. Drag and drop the .mid file you just downloaded into the upload area.
  3. (Optional) Choose your sound: This is the magic part. Unlike Chrome Music Lab's limited sounds, you can select different SoundFonts (e.g., Acoustic Grand Piano, Rock Organ, Synth strings).
  4. Select MP3 as the output format.

Step 3: Convert and Download

  1. Click the "Convert" button.
  2. Wait a few seconds. Since MidiToolbox uses Local Processing, your file is converted directly on your device—it’s fast and private.
  3. Click "Download" to save your new MP3 file.

You now have a studio-quality audio file of your Song Maker creation!

Bonus Tip: How to Edit Your Song Further?

Did you run out of space in Song Maker? Chrome Music Lab limits how long your song can be.

If you want to extend your song, fix a wrong note, or change the tempo without limitations:

  1. Take that same MIDI file.
  2. Open the MidiToolbox Editor.
  3. You can now copy/paste sections, adjust note velocity, and edit your track with a professional Piano Roll interface.
